Willy Wonka fans all know of the Everlasting Gobstopper. The fictional round jawbreaker-like candy was designed by Mr. Wonka for children who had little spending money. The Gobstopper was developed to last forever so the candy could be enjoyed over and over again without having to buy another.
Mr. Wonka did love his candy but let's move on to the everlasting effect of identity theft.
In January 2009, Heartland Payment Systems released that that intruders hacked into the computers it uses to process 100 million payment card transactions per month for 175,000 merchants.
Heartland processes card payments for restaurants, retailers and other merchants. An updated report from StorefrontBacktalk, says Heartland Payment Systems, on August 4, 2009 said it spent $32 million this year paying for costs related to the major data breach it disclosed in January.
As the Heartland data breach damages continue to mount, the effects on Heartland and the identity theft victims will certainly be everlasting.
