On December 4,2008, CNET News reported a hacking which occurred on December 2, 2008.

Check your accounts if you pay bills online, you or someone you know may be a victim of identity theft.

This link shows the extensive list of companies at risk.

Identity theft protection offered by most banks, credit unions, and credit card companies, only does credit monitoring. Credit monitoring, only covers one type of identity theft, financial. There are four other common types.

The other types of identity theft are driver's license, social security, medical, and character/criminal.

Driver's license and social security identity theft are used when someone needs a new history for themselves, an example would be if the information was used to obtain a job. Character/criminal identity theft is when the information is used to ruin a person's character or commit a crime. Medical identity theft is the most dangerous of all. Most often medical information is used to get medical treatment. Diagnosis, conditions, symptoms, and more can be changed and be life threatening to the real patient of the medical information.

Identity theft protection is a must in today's world. When selecting an identity theft protection plan be sure to compare carefully. The plan should cover the five common types of identity theft, provide for total restoration prior to the theft, and access to an attorney for other issues which my occur, such as legal or use of the information outside of the person's state or country.
