
Identity theft. Ask anyone if they heard of it five years ago. Most likely the major consensus is that identity theft is a new crime with has popped up over the last few years. Especially due to humorous commercials making light of the crime.
In fact, the crime of identity theft is ageless.
The crime has been around since the beginning of time and occur in many forms. The most familiar form is financial, mostly concerning credit cards. A few of the other types, medical, social security, driver's license, and criminal are the types which can ruin a life or put one in danger.
Occurring throughout the ages, the crime was usually confined to family or friends. In the 1993 movie, Sommersby, Richard Gere impersonates a man whom he was imprisioned and became friends with in the Civil War. Gere returned home to Sommersby's hometown and resumed his life. Only in the end to be tried by James Earl Jones. Jones plays a Judge in a trial in which the real Sommersby committed prior to the War. A recent study has found that early one-third of victims reported that personal information was stolen by a friend or family member.
In the last few years, the crime of identity theft has escalated to epidemic levels. Sophisticated methods and organized crime involvement makes everyone an easy target to have their identity stolen.
